Allegiant Air will grow in the East Valley again, this time by launching a new nonstop route between Phoenix-Mesa Gateway and Houston’s William P. Hobby airports.

The Las Vegas-based, ultra-low cost airline will launch the route on Feb. 11, 2021. It will operate twice weekly and tickets are already available on the carrier’s website,

Allegiant is offering promotional fares starting at $49 one way. Keep in mind the airline charges extra for things like carry-on bags, checked luggage and seat assignments.

Houston is the second route the airline added from the East Valley airport by Allegiant in recent months. New service to Santa Maria in California begins on Nov. 19.

Allegiant is driving passenger traffic in East Valley

While many airports across the country are struggling with significant drops in passenger traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway has performed better than most. In September, passenger traffic was down 29% compared with a 54% decrease at Sky Harbor in the same month.

That’s mostly driven by the airport’s primary carrier, Allegiant. The airline has, like every airline, experienced a drop in business, forcing it to downsize staff at its headquarters and furlough pilots. However, its business model offering low cost fares to airports typically not served by other airlines had helped it fare better than other carriers.

FOR SUBSCRIBERS: Why travelers are returning to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

In October, a representative of the airline told the airport’s Board of Directors that Allegiant “has built a robust spring schedule for Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.”

“The return of air travel is being led by leisure travelers looking to safely reconnect with family and friends. Allegiant’s enhanced passenger safety protocols have resulted in a growing number of travelers confidently flying to and from Gateway Airport,” Gail Barney, Queen Creek Mayor and chair of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Board of Directors said.

“We applaud Allegiant’s announcement of new routes, commitment to safety and continued investment in the Greater Phoenix region.”
